Combining photography lessons with summer vacations, Studio 43 organizes a 10-day photography workshop (https://www.facebook.com/vioergfoto) at the Ikarian Center, in the hilly village of Arethousa on the island of Ikaria. We chose Ikaria because it combines mountainous and coastal areas, dramatic scenery (mountains, gorges, rivers, dense vegetation, and beautiful beaches), archaeological sites, an architectural tradition which is sometimes reminiscent of Neolithic civilizations, and people portraits that cannot be found elsewhere. Ikaria is also famous for its fairs, which can inspire and provide an opportunity for practice and lots of fun! The workshop is suitable for amateur as well as advanced photographers and focuses on the experiential learning of basic photography techniques, some principles of artistic photography, and basic digital photo editing. The topics which will be covered are:
1. Exposure metering 2. Shutter speed 3. Aperture 4. Combinations of aperture and shutter speed 5. ISO sensitivity 6. Flash 7. Shooting techniques and modes 8. Framing and modeling your subject 9. Lenses 10. Color 11. Basic digital photo editing 12. Familiarization with the equipment and use of photo studio
At the end of the workshop participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Τhe Ikarian Centre’s headquarters are located near the picturesque village of Arethousa, in a remote rural area on the slope of Mount Atheras, 3 Km (45 min on foot, 10 min by car) away from the sea.
The view is breathtaking and the visitor will be in direct contact with the wild nature of the island: within a 1,5km radius there is nothing but goats and a variation of bushes with olive trees and vineyards. Birds of prey (mainly hawks) live around the area and fly over our facilities. On a clear night you can enjoy a view of the Milky Way in a sky full of stars.
The campus was built in 2001, with respect to the architectural heritage, and includes seminar rooms, a small library, a common kitchen and an office, in a complex of 4 independent buildings. The campus also includes 6 independent rooms equipped with 2 or 3 beds, kitchenette and private bathroom and 1 dormitory, for 8 people. The view to both the mountains and the sea is breathtaking and the place is ideal for those who want to escape from the noise and rush of the cities and tourist destinations, to spend some time close to nature, to enjoy a wonderful landscape that combines the sea and the mountains, to walk on the footpaths of the area or to observe birds of prey from the windows of their rooms.
You must drive for 1,5Km (from the village Arethousa) or 4 Km (from the main street, the crossing in Karavosamo) on a dirt road before you arrive at the Ikarian Centre. Necessary items can be obtained from small shops in Arethousa (1Km – 15min on foot), the coastal village Karavostamo (4 km – 45 min on foot) or the port Evdilos (7Km, ~15 min by car). The visitors can find tavernas and kafenions open during the summer and winter months. The cost of living is quite inexpensive: A meal at one of the local tavernas costs about 9 – 12€ (including wine). The beach (in Karavostamo) is 45 min away on foot (10′ by car)
How to get to Ikaria

- how to get to Ikaria from Samos or other islands
Ikaria has one airport, at the eastern edge of the island, and two ports, Agios Kirkos (40Km away, 1 hour by taxi) and Evdilos (8 Km away, 15min by taxi). Taxi fares: from the airport or Agios Kirikos ~60€, from Evdilos ~10-15€.
The public transport in Ikaria is simply unreliable, better consider that does not exist. Some periods of the year there is a bus from the airport going to Agios Kirikos, where in theory you can take a connection that brings you to Evdilos. You may try it, if you are not very tired and you want to have an experience of an Ikarian adventure![]()
